Malaysia: MyIPO Collaborates with TikTok to Promote Intellectual Property Awareness

The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) has joined forces with the short-form mobile video platform TikTok to maintain adherence to intellectual property laws in Malaysia.

In a shared statement, MyIPO and TikTok announced their partnership, which aims to align TikTok’s platform policies and intellectual property enforcement with Malaysian laws. The collaboration was formalized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

A key aspect of the MoU involves the initiation of training programs and the dissemination of knowledge on intellectual property within the TikTok community, particularly among entrepreneurs active in the TikTok Shop. With over one million sellers in Malaysia, of which 98 percent are small and medium enterprises, this initiative targets a significant portion of the TikTok Shop community.

Simultaneously, TikTok has introduced the Intellectual Property Protection Center (IPPC), a dedicated platform enabling intellectual property owners to directly file complaints with TikTok regarding potential infringements by sellers on TikTok Shop.

Through this strategic collaboration, MyIPO and TikTok underscore their dedication to ensuring the effective functioning of the intellectual property ecosystem in Malaysia, benefiting all stakeholders. The joint effort aims to increase awareness of intellectual property rights, particularly among individuals, especially entrepreneurs operating on TikTok Shop, with the goal of encouraging understanding and protection of their intellectual property rights.
