Cambodia government intimidates to take legal actions against entities illegally use its logo
The Cambodian government has issued a warning to foreign businesses that are using national symbols, such as the flag and temples, as logos without proper authorization.
The Ministry of Commerce has threatened legal action against these entities, citing examples involving U.S. food wholesalers and businesses that have incorporated images of the Angkor Wat and Bayon temples, as well as the Cambodian national flag, on their product packaging.
Instances from 2020 and 2021 were highlighted by the ministry, stating that they had collaborated with Cambodian embassies overseas to address the unauthorized use of national insignia on goods in the global market. Efforts were made to prevent the labeling and distribution of these products by contacting the countries of origin.
Businesses and retailers have been instructed to remove unauthorized logos and refrain from using national symbols on their merchandise. Legal action is being actively pursued against specific businesses, including California-based Seng Cheang Mong Food Corp, which features the Bayon Temple logo on its dry noodle packaging sold in stores and online in Florida and California.
Penn Sovicheat, the ministry’s Secretary of State, emphasized the collaboration between relevant authorities, including the foreign ministry and the Cambodian embassy in the U.S., to address the issue. He stressed the importance of protecting Cambodian intellectual property rights and stated that legal action would be taken against non-compliant businesses.
Sovicheat highlighted previous incidents where the Angkor Wat Temple insignia was misused on product packaging. However, after intervention from the government and other parties, these businesses removed the emblem from their products.
