The United Nations launches online platform to support musicians in the protection of Intellectual Property rights

The United Nations, in collaboration with ABBA lyricist Bjorn Ulvaeus, has launched an online platform called Creators Learn Intellectual Property (CLIP) to assist musicians in understanding their rights to intellectual property (IP) and obtaining fair recognition in the digital era. The initiative is part of the Music Rights Awareness Foundation, established by Ulvaeus in partnership with the UN’s World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

CLIP aims to educate artists on how to ensure fair compensation for their work, especially in the context of the increasing digitalization of information. The platform will focus on the music business in its initial iteration, helping users learn about the inner workings of the industry, understand the parties involved in releasing a song, and grasp the rights of music creators.

Bjorn Ulvaeus emphasized the importance of creators knowing and managing their IP rights for a successful career in the music industry. The CLIP platform is designed to support creators in understanding the complexities of the creative industries, enabling them to maximize the value of their creations.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Music Rights Awareness Foundation have unveiled a new online platform named CLIP (Creators Learn Intellectual Property). This initiative aims to enhance creators’ understanding of intellectual property (IP) rights and associated management practices, ensuring they receive due recognition and fair compensation for their creative endeavors.

CLIP, a user-friendly and freely accessible online learning platform, will feature curated content contributed by experienced musicians and mentors. The platform is designed to assist creators in making informed business decisions. Despite a surge in global content creation, creators often lack crucial information on managing their intellectual property rights, especially in the digital realm, where proper credit and compensation may be overlooked. CLIP seeks to address this gap.

Acknowledging the global importance of creators who contribute music, art, and other content to society, WIPO Director General Daren Tang emphasizes the necessity of supporting creators to ensure their recognition and fair compensation. CLIP is positioned to equip creators with the knowledge and skills needed to transform their artistic passion into a sustainable profession.

By early 2024, CLIP plans to be available in six languages, facilitating easy access for creators worldwide. The platform, accessible via smartphones, will offer instant access to a wealth of content, including videos featuring established creators sharing their personal experiences.

Björn Ulvaeus, Co-Founder of the Music Rights Awareness Foundation and ABBA legend, underscores the significance of managing IP rights for a successful career in the music industry. CLIP, he notes, is committed to supporting creators by helping them navigate the complexities of the creative industries and maximize the value of their creations.

Initially focusing on the music industry, CLIP’s first version empowers users to explore the industry’s ecosystem, understand the various individuals involved in bringing a song to market, and grasp music creator rights and their efficient management. The platform also provides awareness of the roles and responsibilities of different parties in the music industry, laying the foundation for creators to be recognized and adequately compensated for their work.

Developed by WIPO for Creators, a consortium formed by WIPO and the Music Rights Awareness Foundation with the support of key creative industry stakeholders, CLIP emerges as a valuable resource for creators seeking to navigate the intricate landscape of intellectual property rights.
