Malaysia collaborates with Tiktok to limit IP infringement on Tiktok Shop

The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) and TikTok have collaborated to enhance compliance with intellectual property laws in Malaysia, formalizing their commitment through a recently signed memorandum of agreement (MoU).

In a joint statement, MyIPO and TikTok underscored their objective to align the platform’s intellectual property (IP) policy and enforcement with Malaysian IP laws. The partnership also places emphasis on providing training and sharing expertise and information on IP within the TikTok community, especially among businesses actively participating in the TikTok Shop. This is a critical aspect of the MoU, given that over a million merchants, with 98 percent being small and medium-sized businesses, are currently active on TikTok Shop in Malaysia.

Simultaneously, TikTok introduced the Intellectual Property Protection Center (IPPC), a specialized forum enabling IP rights owners to directly submit complaints to TikTok if they suspect a vendor on TikTok Shop is infringing on IP rights.

Through this collaboration, MyIPO and TikTok reiterate their commitment to ensuring the smooth functioning of Malaysia’s IP ecosystem, benefiting all stakeholders. The alliance seeks to promote greater awareness and understanding of IP rights, especially among entrepreneurs operating on TikTok Shop.
