IPOPHL: intellectual property registration increased by 3.7% in 2022
According to the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), intellectual property (IP) registrations increased by 3.7 percent in 2022 to 48,259 filings, up from 46,558 applications in 2021.
According to IPOPHL, the IP submissions last year were a record high for the agency, given that the economy is still recovering from the pandemic.
IP registration in 2022 is also up by 2% over pre-pandemic levels, with 47,328 submissions in 2019. Patents, trademarks, utility models, and industrial designs can all be registered to obtain intellectual property protection.
The majority of registrations in 2022 were for trademark applications, accounting for 41,235 of all filings, a 4% increase from the previous year. Trademark applications show a rise in the emergence of new brands.
Residents filed 61 percent of the overall trademark applications, while non-residents filed 39 percent. The majority of trademark registrations (18.4 percent of the total) were for pharmaceutical, health, and cosmetic products. This was followed by agricultural products and services (16.6 percent of trademark applications) and scientific research, information, and communication technology (14.9 percent of trademark applications).
The number of patent applications, on the other hand, increased by 9.3 percent to 4,403. Non-residents filed 89 percent of these applications (3,918), while local residents filed 11 percent (485).
Pharmaceuticals accounted for the majority of patent applications, accounting for 28.9 percent of the total. Organic fine chemistry accounted for 12.1 percent of applications, with digital communications accounting for 8.3 percent.
However, both utility model (UM) and industrial design (ID) fillings have decreased slightly year on year. UM applications decreased from 1,615 to 1,386 while ID registration decreased from 1,265 to 1,235.
