AAA IPRIGHT’s Interview to ‘The Daily NNA’ in Singapore and Asia: IP in Singapore.
The Daily NNA: According to PwC’s survey, Singapore ranks 14th globally for idea intensity (543 patents granted per million population) in 2017, up from 16th place in 2010 (359 granted per million population).
・The Daily NNA: What do you think the main reason for increasing the number of patents granted from 2010 to 2017?
AAA IPRIGHT: The increasing is a true reflection for focus of Government of Singapore on intellectual property. They has launched different policies to encourage parties to strengthen their innovation, R&D. Meanwhile, Intellectual property Office of Singapore (IPOS) is successfully applying fast-track artificial intelligence (AI)-related patent applications which enable the agency to handle the patent as little as six months rather than the usual two to four years.
・The Daily NNA: Compared to other Asian countries, Singapore is more easier for foreigners (non-resident) to apply for the patent ?
AAA IPRIGHT: Basically, all Asian countries allow foreigners to file patent in their country provided that they need to use the licensed patent office. Singapore is always following the same. The most convenient things for foreigner to file patent in Singapore is that they can file patent‘s specification in English which shall save their cost of translation and ensure the correction of the specification. In addition, the fast process of patent examination in Singapore is an outstanding point.
