IPOPHL and the Filipino Inventors Federation join hands to enhance PH rank in Global Innovation Index

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) and the Filipino Inventors Federation (FILINFED) have forged a closer relationship through a memorandum of arrangement (MOA) aimed at strengthening ties with the nation’s innovators and inventors.

Under this agreement, IPOPHL commits to providing advanced training initiatives, including support for FILINFED members to enhance their understanding of the IP registration process, ensuring a smoother and more convenient application experience.

Director General Rowel S. Barba emphasized that this alliance highlights IPOPHL’s shared dedication to fostering innovation and assisting inventors in realizing their groundbreaking ideas. He noted the importance of addressing inventors’ challenges in protecting, enforcing, and commercializing their intellectual property, with the ultimate goal of improving the nation’s ranking in the Global Innovation Index (GII).

Currently at the 56th position in the GII as of 2023, the Philippines aims to climb to the 25th position by 2040, as outlined in the National Innovation Agenda and Strategy Document 2023-2032.

Deputy Director General Anne Claire C. Cabochan highlighted that the partnership could contribute to enhancing the nation’s GII scores, particularly in the categories of Knowledge Creation under Knowledge and Technology Outputs, and Innovation Links under Business Sophistication.

FILINFED President Archie Y. Melano welcomed the collaboration with IPOPHL, noting that registration of inventors’ works is essential for accessing funding from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and other benefits, including tax breaks provided by Republic Act 7549, also known as the Inventors and Invention Incentives Law.

Looking ahead, NIC Academe Representative Ria Liza C. Canlas expressed hope that the federation members would thrive in business endeavors, aiming to elevate the quality of inventions and innovations into well-regarded Likhang Pinas (Philippine-made) technologies. These endeavors seek to showcase Filipino ingenuity, utilize environmentally friendly resources, and uplift marginalized communities.
