The procedure of trademark renewal in Japan

In Japan, a trademark right expires 10 years after the date it was registered. You can renew your trademark right six months before it expires by submitting a renewal request.

The renewal cost must be paid at the same time as your request to renew your trademark right. The late renewal deadline is 6 months after the expiration date.

There will be 3 reminders to notify you of the upcoming expiration date of your trademark right. Around six months before the expiration date, we send you a first reminder via email and/or mail, which marks the beginning of the six-month renewal period. Next, we’ll send you a second reminder about two months before the expiration date, followed by a third and final reminder about one month before the expiration date.

The renewal fee can be paid in two installments as well, one for the first five years and the next for the last five years in the same way that you pay registration fees. When paid over installments, however, the amount of the renewal fee ends up being higher than if it were paid all at once.

The late renewal fee will double the amount of the renewal fee. It is possible to reduce class(es) at the renewal request. The JPO does not issue renewal certificates. Only postcards showing acceptance of renewal are issued.
