GOAT in boxing
The term “GOAT”, also known famously as an acronym for “Greatest of All Time” rather than referring to the animal in the sport industry, is mainly used in football of the United Kingdom or soccer according to the United States. However, the term is not only used for these sports where the athletes use foots to settle score. Surprisingly, Muhammad Ali Enterprises holds the trademark for “G.O.A.T.,” and they’re currently embroiled in a complex dispute over it.
On January 23, 2024, Muhammad Ali Enterprises filed a trademark opposition against Be the GOAT Games, LLC, which had applied to trademark “G.O.A.T. Greatest of All Time” for their card game. Muhammad Ali Enterprises claimed that granting registration to the game company would harm their own brand. However, their attempt to monopolize the “G.O.A.T.” trademark might face challenges.
When Be the GOAT Games applied for a trademark in September 2022, they intended to protect the name of their card game for clothing. They argue that their game answers the question of who the greatest of all time is. However, Muhammad Ali Enterprises already holds trademarks for similar terms across various classes.
The dispute hinges on whether consumers are likely to confuse the card game company with Muhammad Ali Enterprises. While Muhammad Ali Enterprises argues that consumers would immediately associate “G.O.A.T.” with Muhammad Ali, others question this claim given the widespread use of the term in various contexts.
Adding complexity to the matter, another contender has emerged. On January 24, 2024, GOAT USA Inc. filed an opposition against Be the GOAT Games, citing their own federal trademarks featuring variations of “GOAT” and “Greatest of All Time” for apparel.
Both Muhammad Ali Enterprises and GOAT USA assert their exclusive rights over their intellectual property, given their multiple trademark registrations. However, considering the extensive use of the term “Greatest of All Time” over decades, the question arises whether anyone can truly own the “G.O.A.T.” trademark.
