Korea Copyright Commission opens copyright museum in South Korea to increase copyright awareness

The National Copyright Museum in Jinju, South Gyeongsang, was officially opened through a collaborative initiative between the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Copyright Commission. This newly established government-operated museum aims to provide diverse hands-on experiences for young Koreans, enabling them to easily comprehend matters related to copyright.

During the inauguration ceremony, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yu In-chon highlighted the essential nature of safeguarding the rights of creators as a fundamental requirement for advancing culture, arts, and content industries.

As part of the event, Amazon, a dance crew affiliated with 1Million Dance Studio, delivered a performance emphasizing the significance of choreography in K-pop and advocating for copyright protection.

Notably, three choreographic pieces by Back Kooyoung, a choreographer associated with 1Million Dance Studio known for his work with K-pop bands such as EXO and The Boyz, were contributed to the museum. These works will be featured in an interactive exhibition segment designed to educate visitors about choreography copyright law through hands-on experiences.

The first floor of the museum offers an immersive exploration of the creative process, providing insights into potential copyright challenges. The Ministry of Culture emphasized the relevance of copyright across various creative domains, including music, video production, photography, computer science, and architecture, underscoring the importance of copyright awareness for artists.

On the second level, the museum serves as an educational hub, offering a variety of activities related to the exhibitions on the ground floor. The National Copyright Museum has acquired a total of 415 historical and archival documents on copyright. These resources include “Seoyugyeonmun” (1895) by Yoo Gil-joon, the first Korean document discussing copyright, and a 1961 photocopy of the Gutenberg Bible.

Minister Yu stated, “We will make every effort to ensure that the copyright industry continues to grow and evolve in accordance with the new environment.”
