Japan and Thailand increase its GI registration indications

Japan and Thailand have expanded their Geographical Indication (GI) registrations in a mutual effort. Japan has sought GI protection for Tajima and Kagoshima beef in Thailand, while Thailand has successfully secured GI status for Doi Chaang and Doi Tung coffee in Japan. Both countries have recently announced the successful registration of these GIs.

These successful registrations serve a dual purpose. They aim to promote the distinct identity and cultural significance of these products, benefiting local communities by generating income and opening up more trade opportunities for agricultural goods.

Notably, Thailand currently holds the fourth position among ASEAN countries and ranks 24th globally in coffee exports. It’s worth mentioning that Thailand exported coffee worth B36 million (equivalent to US$1.03 million) to Japan in the previous year. Furthermore, Doi Chaang and Doi Tung coffees are renowned for their unique flavors and exceptional quality.

In addition to these developments, there are other products in line for GI certification. These include Huay Mon pineapples in Japan, Pakpanang Tab Tim Siam pomelo, Phetchabun sweet tamarind, and Thung Kula Rong-Hai hom mali rice in China.

Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit also highlighted the significance of the GI system. He noted that over the past two decades, this system has added substantial value to more than 189 local products across Thailand.

During the “GI 20/20 Mission: 20 Years of Thai GI Advancement” event organized by the Intellectual Property Department, it was revealed that these GI-protected products have contributed to a market value exceeding B51 billion (approximately US$1.45 billion).

Over the past two decades, Japan and Thailand have developed a multifaceted and cooperative relationship marked by economic collaboration, cultural exchange, diplomatic ties, and various other aspects:

  1. Economic Partnership: Japan and Thailand have cultivated a robust economic partnership, with Japan serving as a significant source of foreign direct investment in Thailand. Japanese companies have made substantial investments in diverse sectors of the Thai economy, including automotive manufacturing and electronics.
  2. Trade Relations: Bilateral trade between Japan and Thailand has thrived during this period. Thailand exports agricultural products like rice and seafood to Japan, while Japan reciprocates by exporting machinery, electronics, and automobiles to Thailand.
  3. Cultural Exchange: Cultural exchange between the two nations has deepened, with a growing interest in each other’s cultures. This includes the popularity of Japanese pop culture, such as anime and J-pop, in Thailand, as well as Thai cultural festivals and language learning in Japan.
