Vietnam’s ST25 Rice Continues to Win World’s Best Rice Award in 2023

ST25 rice, the flagship product of the Vietnamese brand “Gạo ông Cua” (Mr. Cua’s Rice), has once again secured the top prize at the 15th World’s Best Rice competition held in the Philippines this year. This marks the second time this particular rice variety has won the World’s Best Rice award, with the first achievement dating back to 2019.

ST25 rice is a premium and distinctive rice variety grown in Vietnam. It is the result of research and development efforts by a group of farmers in Vinh Thanh district, Can Tho province, Vietnam. ST25 rice has gained global attention for its unique flavor and high quality.

Characterized by long, soft grains and a distinctive aroma, ST25 rice is considered one of the best rice varieties in the world. It previously won the “World’s Best Rice” award at the 2019 World’s Best Rice competition in the Philippines. This victory significantly enhanced the reputation of Vietnamese rice in the global market and provided additional momentum for Vietnamese brands to thrive internationally.

In 2020, Vietnam’s entry secured the second position, and in 2022, Cambodia claimed the top spot at the competition held in Phuket, Thailand, while Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos all made it to the top 4.

Key features of ST25 rice include bright white grains, moderate stickiness, and a unique flavor described as a blend of jasmine rice, corn rice, and glutinous rice.

The 2023 World’s Best Rice competition featured participation from over 10 countries, with a total of 30 rice samples submitted for consideration. Cambodia secured the second prize, while India received the third prize.

Mr. Ho Quang Cua, known as the creator of the ST25 rice variety, represented Vietnam to receive the award in the Philippines. According to Mr. Cua, after their rice variety 68-10 won the World’s Best Rice award in 2019, they continued their research and development efforts, leading to the creation of the 72-6 variety by 2021.

The 72-6 rice variety may not have a distinctive appearance due to its short and inclined rice plants, but they are less prone to falling and have an earlier flowering time by 5 days compared to the 68-10 variety. The grains of this variety are slightly shorter by about 0.2mm, and the rice recovery rate is approximately 0.5% higher than the 68-10 variety.

The sample rice was grown on a 2.6-hectare field owned by Mr. Luu Van Hai in Thanh Thoi An commune, Tran De district, Soc Trang province, during the summer-autumn crop. This was one of the experimental fields using biological products to prevent diseases and insects on rice plants without the use of synthetic chemicals.

The World’s Best Rice Competition is an annual event organized to search for and honor rice varieties of high quality and exceptional taste worldwide. Established in 2009 by The Rice Trader, a leading publication on the global rice market, the competition has become a significant event in the rice industry.

The World’s Best Rice competition plays a crucial role in promoting innovation and healthy competition in the rice industry, while providing consumers worldwide the opportunity to enjoy top-quality rice varieties.
