Thailand strengthens copyright protection through MOU with 30 copyright owners

The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) in Thailand, led by Director-General Vuttikrai Leewiraphan, has recently unveiled a memorandum of agreement (MOU) involving 30 copyright owners and three prominent online marketplaces—Lazada, Shopee, and TikTok Shop.

This collaborative effort aims to intensify the fight against piracy and counterfeit goods in Thailand. Additionally, the DIP is actively engaged with Facebook to develop technologies capable of detecting and removing counterfeit products to address copyright concerns.

These measures are expected to enhance the country’s competitiveness and intellectual property (IP) environment while reducing the circulation of counterfeit goods. The DIP encourages both businesses and consumers to contribute to the fight against counterfeit goods by opting for genuine products, verifying the origin and quality of their purchases, and reporting any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.

According to estimates by the DIP, counterfeit goods worth over B2.5 billion (US$72.9 million) were seized in Thailand in 2019. Among the most frequently counterfeited items were cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and clothing.

Counterfeit goods not only pose a threat to legitimate businesses that invest in research and development (R&D) but also jeopardize the health and safety of consumers who may unwittingly purchase substandard or contaminated products.

Moreover, they tarnish Thailand’s reputation as a dependable trading partner and a destination known for offering high-quality products and services. Despite these challenges, Thailand continues to face difficulties in enforcing IP rights laws and safeguarding innovation against piracy and infringement.
