Talks on IP matters in the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) Working Group on Intellectual Property (WGIP)
During the 17th Round of Negotiations of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) Working Group on Intellectual Property (WGIP), Indonesia’s Ministry of Law and Human Rights addressed various issues related to the intellectual property (IP) system.
Marchienda Werdany, head of foreign cooperation at the ministry’s Directorate General of Intellectual Property, highlighted the objective of ensuring the IP protection systems of both the EU and Indonesia. Werdany stressed the importance of providing legal certainty to economic players during the discussions.
The forum primarily focused on several proposals from the EU, including those concerning genetic resources and traditional knowledge, the duration of industrial design protection, and the safeguarding of data associated with pharmaceutical products.
The IEU-CEPA agreement, under which Indonesia and the EU collaborate on trade, addresses numerous IP-related concerns. The 17th round of discussions took place from February 26 to March 1, 2024, in Bandung, West Java.
Aldamayo Panadjam Panjaitan, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted Indonesia’s firm stance during the negotiations. He mentioned that the European Union has begun to accommodate Indonesia’s interests in its proposals. Panjaitan expressed optimism that the negotiations would result in an agreement beneficial to both Indonesia and the EU.
Jerry Sambuaga, the vice minister of trade, stated that the IEU-CEPA talks are expected to conclude in 2024, before the government transition, indicating the importance both sides place on reaching a mutually beneficial economic cooperation agreement.
