Philippines and Indonesia agreement on the creative economy

Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia and Ferdinand Marcos Jr., President of the Philippines have recently signed 4 agreements on the establishment of a creative economy, along with other goals between the 2 countries.

The 4 agreements between the Philippines and Indonesia are on bilateral economic, defense, and cultural cooperation. One of the agreements is to work together on promoting each other’s creative economy.

To speed up the process of interconnection between countries, the presidents of both countries have issued the decisions to establish task groups whose main purpose is to hasten the implementation of the areas in the agreements.

The basis of the agreement on creative economy is the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by Philippine Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual and Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno for cooperation in the development and promotion of the creative economy between Indonesia and the Philippines.

The MOU aims to increase economic engagement between the two countries by encouraging the exchange of information on market research and policy trends, as well as facilitating co-production and co-branding programs and marketing innovative products, goods, and services.

According to the provisions in the creative economy agreement, the 2 countries will share information on best practices and how to further develop the fashion industry, architecture, digital media, performing arts, music, theater, dance, and other creative services.

This collaboration is the latest demonstration of the strong ties between Indonesia and the Philippines which have long had a lasting mutual friendship and respect for each other.

In addition, one other worthwhile note is the renewal of cultural cooperation between Indonesia and the Philippines which was signed by the DFA on behalf of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Foreign Minister of Indonesia for its Ministry of Education and Culture.

The DFA said that the deal “will enhance our cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and promote better understanding and appreciation of each other’s remarkable culture, founded on our rich histories.”

Expert opinions

Arjel De Guzman, the founding director of Optmarks in Manila expressed his view about the creative economy deal: “The creative economy is such a vital cog in every economic ecosphere. In the Philippines, especially, creativity is almost embedded in the genes of every Filipino. Creatives and skilled workers alike are important players in the economy, especially with the global demand for creative content and products being at its peak right now.”

“The creative economy is on the rise. With the advent of new technologies and the ever-evolving forms of communication and access, creativity is brought to a new level we have not seen before. The influx of high-value content and products, along with an all-time high level of traditional and digital content consumption, contribute to this substantial growth of the creative industry. It is a very promising and bright industry, so to speak.”

On the matter of Intellectual Property which is also a key part to form a creative economy, Guzman added: “The creative economy benefits IP in particular because Ip thrives in creativity, and creativity, on the other hand, is secured through the implementation of various IP laws. The two are intricately interconnected such that the development of one would likely lead to the success of the other.”
