Life sciences innovation increases rapidly in the Philippines
The Philippines is witnessing a significant surge in innovation within the life sciences sector. Hence, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) recognizes the need to enhance collaboration with key partners to overcome challenges and accelerate the development of life-saving therapies and medical technology.
Alejandro Campaña, senior director at WIPO’s IP for Innovators Department, highlighted the steady growth of the sector during his opening remarks at the Asian Regional Conference in Support of Accelerated Life Sciences Innovation. IPOPHL data reveals a yearly increase of more than 4 percent in patent applications within the pharmaceutical industry since 2020.
Campaña emphasized the importance of international best practices, citing the encouragement of teamwork as a notable example. He pointed out the significance of multisectoral collaboration during the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to the expedited development and launch of vaccinations within one and a half years, a process that typically takes 10 to 15 years. WIPO’s patent applications data, where nearly a quarter involved multiple inventors, served as substantial evidence of this collaborative effort.
In line with Campaña’s statement, IPOPHL’s Director General Rowel S. Barba highlighted the round-the-clock efforts of life science businesses, government entities, and medical and research institutions. These efforts aimed to develop life-saving medicines and devices to provide immediate relief to people threatened by Covid-19.
During the pandemic, IPOPHL gathered technologies from its network of Innovation and Technology Support Offices across the Philippines. These initiatives helped address shortages of essential medical supplies by informing the public about substitute solutions, showcasing the collective efforts to fill market gaps and support the healthcare system.
