IP Week @ SG 2021 announced focal development for enterprises in Singapore

During the recent IP Week @ SG 2021, IPOS has announced a strong boost for business enterprises in Singapore. Specifically, the focal development for enterprises in Singapore will be IP resources which will help businesses to create a strong IP protection plan for themselves and emerge stronger in the future, post-pandemic situation.

Singapore Intellectual Property Week is one of the world’s leading IP events, bringing together thousands of attendees from dozens of countries and territories, including many leaders, planners, and leaders, IP policymakers, legal professionals, and innovative businesses.

The IP Week initiative was first launched by IPOS in 2012, and has now been held 9 times and has attracted more and more delegates from the business and intellectual property communities in the region and around the world. Although this year’s IP week was held in combination in-person and online (mostly online) due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was still attended by about 5,000 delegates from 45 countries.

During the IP Week @ SG 2021, these experts have met, exchanged, and shared experiences around the role and importance of IP as well as innovation activities for economic development.

Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law and guest-of-honor during the launch of IP Week held on August 24-25, 2021 has delivered: “In line with the Singapore IP Strategy 2030, which we launched earlier this April, we are introducing a suite of resources to help enterprises maximize the value of their intangible assets (IA) and IP.”

With these new resources available, there are some that businesses and enterprises will surely be very interested in. For once, there is a complimentary IP business and legal clinics with its network of IP law firms and business consultancy firms once a week.

With this program, businesses that are in difficulties due to IP problems can consult an even larger pool of IP practitioners during a clinic session starting from September 2021.

Furthermore, to grow Singapore’s IP talent, to have a new generation of IP experts in Singapore, IPOS has also partnered with the Singapore Management University’s Yong Pung How School of Law to pilot the Mentoring IP Leaders program.

Specifically, third and final-year law students who have proved their talents during the learning period may apply and be mentored by participating law firms during IPOS’s IP legal clinics.

Furthermore, there is also a program called the Skills Future Study Award for IP that Singaporeans can apply to be awarded $5,000 in training grants for up to 30 individuals to build up IP capabilities and develop industry-relevant IP skills.

To improve IP dispute resolution proceedings in Singapore, IPOS has also created a list of Singapore-based IP expert witnesses who can support in court proceedings or arbitrations relating to IP and technology disputes. The members in the list consist of 16 expert witnesses who hail from various industry sectors, including engineering, healthcare, manufacturing, Infocomm technology, and pharmaceutical.

Another key aspect announced during the IP week is Brand Search. This program is a 4-in one search function on the IPOS GO mobile app. With this program, businesses who just starts their IP protection plan can have more ease deciding to focus on their trademark, brand, etc. without the need to conduct an in-depth trademark search (although still recommended).

With Brand Search, business owners can save time and avoid complicated procedures by conducting a quick search for similar business names, trademarks, available domain names, and social media usernames and accordingly, deciding their IP protection plan in the future.
