Thailand is set to register Phuket’s famous 7-colour lobster as geographical indication
Vuttikrai Leewiraphan, Department of Intellectual Property (DIP)’s director-general, recently disclosed that officials have visited the southern island province to observe the cultivation of the seven-colour lobster and gather information from local businesses.
In line with the government’s soft power policy and to further enhance tourism and the local economy, the DIP aims to register this distinctive crustacean, which has become a sought-after delicacy among visitors frequenting Phuket eateries, as the country’s latest GI product.
Leewiraphan stated, “Phuket is Thailand’s foremost tourism destination on the Andaman coast, attracting over 10 million tourists annually and contributing over 330 billion baht to the local economy. Expanding the array of GI products will support manufacturers, farmers, and fishermen in the province to expand their businesses and attract more tourists.”
The seven-colour lobster found in Phuket is notable for its large head and body, thick and colourful shell, and robust antennae. Mature lobsters, weighing between 3.5 and 4.5 kg, can be consumed either raw or cooked.
Furthermore, the department has previously registered two GI items from Phuket: the Phuket pearl and the Phuket pineapple. The registration process for Phuket garcinia, also known as “buffalo orange,” is currently underway, marking the potential addition of a third GI product from the region.
