According to central bank data, South Korea had a surplus in the trade of intellectual property rights in the first half of this year, as copyright exports rose.

According to preliminary statistics from the Bank of Korea, the nation’s intellectual property account surplus was US$850 million in the first half, compared to a deficit of $1.11 billion in the second half of previous year.
It was the first six-month surplus since the nation reported a $350 million surplus in the trading of intellectual property rights in the second half of 2019.
Its exports of products and services subject to intellectual property rights payments totaled $8.75 billion in the first half, up from $8.02 billion the previous six months. Imports dropped from $9.13 billion to $7.9 billion.
South Korea has a $1.47 billion trade deficit with the United States in terms of intellectual property rights.
In the first half of the year, South Korea had a trade deficit with Japan. The gap was $310 million, up from a $120 million loss six months prior.
With China and Vietnam, South Korea has a trade surplus in intellectual property rights. It has a $1.14 billion trade surplus with China. South Korea also has a $970 million surplus with Vietnam.
