India initiates Special drive program to dispose old pending trademark applications

India’s Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) has announced a Special Drive for Old Pending TM Applications, scheduled from April 8 to April 25, 2024. The aim is to expedite the disposal of longstanding trademark applications that have been awaiting show cause hearings, particularly those with outdated service or email addresses.

Applicants and their representatives are urged to attend physical hearings at their respective Trademarks Registry branch offices during the specified dates, bringing along all necessary supporting documentation.

Sonal Madan, Partner at Chadha & Chadha in New Delhi, commended this initiative as a proactive step towards resolving long-pending trademark matters. She noted that this effort, along with previous initiatives like the ‘special drive for disposal of IP disputes’ initiated in August 2022, reflects CGPDTM’s commitment to enhancing intellectual property protection and enforcement.

Madan further highlighted the significance of these special drives in conjunction with ongoing digitization efforts for trademark hearings, emphasizing their contribution to modernization and accessibility within the Indian Trade Marks Office.

Aligned with CGPDTM’s objective to address a substantial number of trademark applications and oppositions by 2025, these measures underscore the office’s dedication to streamlining trademark processes and enhancing efficiency.
