Basic Overview of the International Trademark Association (INTA)

The International Trademark Association (INTA) is a global association consisting of trademark owners and prominent intellectual property experts from around the world. With extensive experience and specialized knowledge, INTA aims to research, collaborate, and promote the development and advancement of intellectual property rights for the betterment of humanity.

INTA: The International Trademark Association is a global association comprising nearly 6,500 member organizations from 165 countries. It represents over 34,000 trademark professionals, including trademark owners from large corporations, small and medium-sized enterprises, law firms, and nonprofit organizations. Additionally, INTA has expanded its membership to include government agencies, professors, and students with notable expertise and achievements in intellectual property.

INTA undertakes policy advocacy worldwide to enhance the influence and awareness of trademarks among the general public. It provides educational programs, resources, and legal information of global interest.

History of INTA

Originally known as the United States Trademark Association (USTA), INTA was founded in November 1878 in New York City by 17 merchants and manufacturers. Its purpose was to protect and promote the rights of trademark owners, ensure supportive legislation, and encourage efforts for the advancement and adherence to trademark rights.

In 1908, the association became a business corporation under the New York Business Corporation Law, granting it various practical rights to protect trademark in the USA and worldwide.

In 1926, USTA became a nonprofit membership organization. In 1993, the association changed its name to the International Trademark Association.

Activities of INTA

INTA provides services to its members and the public in three main areas: global trademark resources, programs and events, and policy advocacy.

INTA produces digital publications, including the INTA Bulletin and The Trademark Reporter, as well as Multijurisdictional Practice Guides that offer practical guidance in various legal topics and jurisdictions worldwide.

Some resources focused on fundamental aspects of trademark law are available to the community free of charge, while other resources concerning legal practices in specific legal areas worldwide are reserved for registered association members.

The Trademark Reporter is a bimonthly scholarly journal that explores all aspects of trademark law, and the INTA Bulletin is a weekly newsletter providing news on the association’s activities, as well as global trademark law developments and trends.

INTA organizes meetings, conferences, roundtable discussions, and webcasts for international trademark experts to discuss trademark issues, intellectual property law, and IP practices worldwide. These events are available to members and may allow non-members to participate, albeit often at a higher registration fee than official members.

INTA also hosts a bimonthly podcast, Brand & New, hosted by Audrey Dauvet, where she interviews a list of influential experts and individuals with international perspectives, focusing on core ideas and expert insights of global significance.

The largest event organized by INTA is the INTA Annual Meeting, which has been held since 1878. The meeting takes place in the spring each year, usually in May, and attracts over 10,000 participants from around the world. It spans five days and offers opportunities for networking, business development, education, career advancement, committee meetings, and exhibitions.

The INTA Annual Meeting 2023 was held in-person in Singapore from May 16 to May 20, 2023.
