Intellectual property surplus reaches a new record high in South Korea
In the first half of this year, South Korea’s intellectual property surplus increased to a new high due to a smaller industrial property rights deficit.

According to the Bank of Korea, trade in intellectual property rights achieved a record surplus of 370 million US dollars from January to June, surpassing the previous high of 350 million dollars in the second half of 2019.
It decreased from a deficit of 1.21 billion dollars in the second half of last year to a deficit of 370 million dollars in the first half in the trading of industrial property rights, including patents.

Trade in design rights had a surplus of 60 million dollars compared to a deficit of 110 million dollars in trade in patent and utility model rights.
The first half of this year saw a decrease in the trademark and franchise rights deficit from 640 million dollars to 320 million dollars.
From 1.41 billion dollars in the second half of last year to 870 million dollars in the first half of this year, the surplus in trading of copyrights decreased.
Each of the research, development, and software copyrights, as well as the culture and art copyrights, had a surplus of 380 million and 490 million dollars.
In the first half, manufacturers reported a surplus of 650 million dollars in the intellectual property rights trade, compared to a deficit of 330 million dollars for services firms.
