India achieves record number of registration certificates for FY 2023-2024
In the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023-2024, India marked a significant achievement with a record-breaking issuance of copyright registration certificates, totaling 38,002, as reported by the country’s Copyright Office. Simultaneously, there were 36,729 new applications filed with India’s Intellectual Property Office.
Among the 38,002 copyright registration certificates issued, the majority, 24,752, were for literary and dramatic works. Artistic works followed closely with 8,224 certificates, while computer software and sound recordings accounted for 2,429 and 2,007 certificates, respectively. Musical works received 135 copyright registration certificates, while cinematograph films received 455.
Aditi Verma Thakur, a senior partner at Ediplis Counsels in Bengaluru, attributed this milestone to initiatives undertaken by the Copyright Office. According to Thakur, official data from the IP Office reveals that approximately 36,000 copyright applications were received, a number notably lower than the roughly 45,000 applications that were ultimately processed. This indicates proactive efforts by the office to streamline the registration process and address backlogs, resulting in accelerated case disposal.
Thakur emphasized the proactive stance and efforts of the IP Office, noting their contribution to India’s vibrant intellectual property ecosystem and ongoing innovation endeavors. The substantial number of applications submitted to the Office reflects its commitment to fostering an environment conducive to intellectual property owners and other stakeholders.
