ST25 rice, also known as Soc Trang 25 rice, is named after the place where it was researched and first produced. This is the latest fragrant rice variety that has been researched and developed for 20 years based on the cooperation of Dr. Tran Tan Phuong, engineer Nguyen Thi Thu Huong and most especially engineer Ho Quang Cua.
20 years ago, the fragrant and delicious ST3 rice variety was recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as the national rice variety by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam. Thanks to good genetic resources, in turn, new types of rice were gradually created and developed so far, creating ST24 and ST25 rice which are extremely popular and even granted protection throughout Europe.
The father of the famous ST25 rice variety is none other than engineer Ho Quang Cua, whose starting point was just a farming family in Hoa Dong commune, Vinh Chau coastal town, Soc Trang province. With his childhood and passion always associated with the field, he decided to study horticulture at Can Tho University and graduated in 1978.
After that, he returned to his hometown and took the position of Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Soc Trang province.
The idea of creating high-quality fragrant rice for Vietnam originated from the time he joined the research team of the Mekong Delta Rice Institute and Can Tho University to collect and test traditional Vietnamese fragrant rice varieties. In 1996, once in a rice field, he realized that there were some rice plants with elongated and beautiful seeds, so he began to breed, propagate and create more than 1000 first mutants. Then, along with his colleagues, he planted a test plant and continued to cross-breed until the most dominant varieties were found for mass production.
In 2017, according to world standards, ST24 rice variety was recognized as one of the 3 best rice varieties in the rice trading conference organized by The Rice Trader, an international rice trade organization, in Ma Tall. In November 2019, engineer Ho Quang Cua and his colleagues brought 2 varieties of rice ST24 and ST25 to the World’s Best Rice contest also organized by The Rice Trader.
Both rice varieties of Ho Quang private enterprise (Soc Trang) are extremely appreciated, surpassing Thailand so that ST25 takes the number 1 position and ST24 number 2 in the world. The results were officially published on trtworldrice.com.
The current ST25 rice is the crystallization of many outstanding advantages, both a high-yielding rice variety and good resistance to saline soils. This rice variety is fertilized based on organic methods, without chemical drugs, fertilizers, or any pesticides. Besides, the nutritional content containing vitamins or minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and protein,… of ST25 is also superior when compared to other rice varieties. One of the decisive factors of ST25 is its taste with the aroma of pandan leaves mixed with the very characteristic aroma of young nuggets.
Investment in the protection of the brand
It can be said that thanks to the great contribution and dedication of engineer Ho Quang Cua, Vietnam’s rice industry has reached a new height. To get the achievements like today, he had to go through an arduous and hard process to fight and invest all his heart in research to protect the world’s best rice variety ST25. One of them was the IP field which is crucial for the commercialization of the rice variety.
Mr. Cua and his enterprise have filed trademark applications for the protection of ST24, ST25 rice brand countless times in Vietnam.
The registration process is long and troublesome with many obstacles along the path. Once, the Rice Trader had to file a warning to his enterprise due to the fact of abuse of the name “World Best Rice”. The abuse action is not made of Ho Quang Tri enterprise or associates but by other third parties who traded in rice.
That one time, Mr. Cua had to call for the help of the Government of Vietnam as well as the citizens of Vietnam.
At the same time, realizing the IP matter is crucial in business success, Ho Quang Tri enterprise had filed trademark applications for ST24, ST25 rice in target markets such as USA, Australia, etc. Recent September, the 3 trademarks filed in Australia have been granted to the business.
