IPOS Encourages Public Participation: Submit Your Suggestions for Classification Database
In an effort to enhance the effectiveness of its Classification Database, the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) has launched a pilot initiative inviting the public to contribute suggested descriptions of goods and services. This move aims to ensure that the Database remains relevant and robust, facilitating a more efficient search and classification process for trademark applicants and agents.
The Initiative Details
From September 1, 2023, to February 29, 2024, public members are invited to submit their suggestions for descriptions of goods and services to be considered for inclusion in the IPOS Classification Database. This window provides an opportunity for stakeholders, including brand owners, to actively participate in shaping the landscape of trademark classifications in Singapore.
IPOS recognizes the importance of a comprehensive and up-to-date Database in the rapidly evolving global business landscape. As markets and technological trends shift, having accurate and relevant descriptions of goods and services becomes crucial for trademark applicants and agents navigating the application process. The public’s input is seen as valuable in ensuring that the Database reflects the dynamic nature of business markets.
Interested parties can submit their suggested descriptions of goods and services exclusively through the designated submission platform. It’s important to note that alternative modes of submission will not be accepted. The submission window closes on February 29, 2024.
IPOS Review and Publication
Following the submission period, IPOS will review the suggested descriptions. Before acceptance and addition to the Database, modifications may be made to align with IPOS’ classification practices. Accepted descriptions are expected to be published approximately three months after submission.
This initiative offers brand owners a unique opportunity to review their portfolios, assess the scope of goods and services within their business, and identify areas where specifications may need refinement. It is particularly relevant for those who have faced specification objections from IPOS that were deemed unacceptable. Brand owners can now proactively submit suggestions to ensure that their operations, products, and services receive appropriate coverage and protection in future trademark applications in Singapore.
Interested parties can submit their suggestions directly through the designated platform. For further clarification or inquiries, participants may contact IPOS at [email protected] with the subject line “Suggestions for IPOS’ Classification Database.”
IPOS’ initiative to involve the public in suggesting descriptions for its Classification Database reflects a commitment to staying abreast of global business trends. By actively engaging stakeholders, IPOS aims to create a more inclusive and relevant trademark classification system that benefits applicants and the broader business community. Brand owners, in particular, should seize this opportunity to contribute to shaping Singapore’s trademark landscape and ensure comprehensive protection for their intellectual property.
