Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property officially recognizes Hague Agreement and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
Saudi Arabia has taken significant steps towards aligning with international intellectual property (IP) standards by officially recognizing the Hague Agreement and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
This move is expected to attract and encourage IP owners worldwide to seek protection in the country. Designs registered through the Hague Agreement will now enjoy the same rights and protections as those registered directly in Saudi Arabia.
Additionally, the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) has introduced a new unified e-portal system to handle all intellectual property matters, aiming to enhance efficiency and streamline operations.
Jehad Ali Hasan, CEO of JAH Intellectual Property in Doha, views these developments positively, foreseeing increased efficiency, alignment with global standards, and extended design protection. He anticipates that the new e-portal system will simplify the application process for trademarks, patents, and other IP matters, potentially leading to higher filing rates from both domestic and international IP owners. Recognizing the Hague Agreement and WIPO standards will make Saudi Arabia’s IP system more compatible with international norms, making it more appealing for foreign IP owners.
Mohcine Fattah, an IP senior director at JAH Intellectual Property, suggests that future developments may include fast-track systems, incentives for local innovation, and the integration of AI-powered tools. Harmonizing Saudi IP laws with international standards could make it easier for foreign companies to protect their IP in the kingdom. Educational programs and initiatives to support inventors and creators, particularly startups, may also be implemented to raise awareness about IP rights and navigate the IP system.
It’s essential to stay updated with official announcements from SAIP to track further developments in Saudi Arabia’s IP landscape.
