Thailand collaborates with Sri Lanka on IP matters
On March 28, 2024, Sri Lanka and Thailand signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) aimed at boosting economic opportunities amid Sri Lanka’s worst financial crisis in decades. The agreement, which covers aspects such as Trade in Goods, Investment, Customs Procedures, and Intellectual Property Rights, is seen as a critical step towards economic recovery for Sri Lanka.
A statement from the Sri Lankan media department highlighted the FTA’s goal to enhance market opportunities. The agreement is part of Sri Lanka’s broader strategy to use trade agreements to stimulate economic growth and support its struggling economy. The World Bank reported a 3.8 percent economic contraction for Sri Lanka last year, exacerbated by a severe foreign currency crisis that deepened its financial woes.
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, led a delegation to Colombo to sign the FTA and other related documents. Srettha also participated in Sri Lanka’s 76th Independence Day celebrations.
“Both parties will benefit greatly from these economic prospects. We urge the business sector to investigate the possibilities of mutual trade and investment,” Srettha said during a media briefing.
The collaboration between Sri Lanka and Thailand on intellectual property matters is expected to foster stronger economic ties and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
