Reports of piracy and counterfeiting in the Philippines

The reports of piracy and counterfeiting in the Philippines have been published with strange numbers, raising concern for the government as well as the consumers of goods in this country.

According to the data from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), from January to June 2022, the number of complaints and reports of piracy and counterfeiting filed with the IPOPHL fell by 48 percent, from 107 to 56.

The report fell even though the actions of counterfeiting haven’t seemed to be resolved is the cause of reason for many consumers, questioning the validity of the data.

According to IPOPHL’s Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Office (IEO), counterfeit clothing, shoes, purses, and eyeglasses accounted for 66% of all counterfeiting accusations. Gadgets come in second with a 9.1% stake, perfume and beauty products come in third, and other items like keychains and umbrellas come in fourth with a 4.5% stake.

However, television episodes and motion pictures outpaced pirate reports in the first half of the year. Additionally, software, general e-books, and works of art are also reported to be faked by netizens.

Learning the data

Although the physical actions of counterfeiting have dropped by almost half compared to the same period last year, online pirating reports have increased. This means that despite the overall drop in reports of piracy and counterfeiting in the Philippines, online piracy is still a major concern, especially during the digital age that we are in right now.

Consequently, it is not yet time to relax. The fight against piracy in the Philippines and Asia, in general, is still at large. The government needs to work closely with private businesses to help them with the battle against counterfeiting.

Nonetheless, the massive reduction in the reports also showed a positive signal. As the majority of the complaints and reports that IPOPHL received in the first half of the year came from netizens, brand, and rights owners, it showed that the people of this country have raised more awareness of the protection of IP rights.

Deputy Director General of IPOPHL, Teodoro Pascua commented about the numbers: “This consistent support for intellectual property enforcement that we have been receiving for the past several years is a reflection of the empowerment of our online community and the concerned public as a result of our activities to raise awareness of intellectual property rights. Additionally, more and more owners of brands and intellectual property have come forward to express their worries about having their rights protected. As we start to feel the impacts of the recovering economy, we want to encourage the kind of proactive intellectual property rights protection.”
