Increase in global patent filings in India

Global patent filings saw an increase from 3.40 million in 2021 to 3.46 million in 2022, marking three consecutive years of growth in global patent applications, according to the World Intellectual Property Indicators Report. China and India played significant roles in driving this growth.

China recorded 1.58 million patent filings by China-based applicants for both domestic and foreign jurisdictions, reflecting a 3.1 percent increase from 2021. Meanwhile, India experienced a substantial surge in patent applications from residents, with a notable increase of 31.6 percent in 2022. Previously, there were limited national filings in India, and most patent applications were international filings entering the country during the national phase.

This was attributed to a lack of awareness of intellectual property (IP) rights, patentable inventions, and the perception, particularly among small businesses, that IP might not yield significant monetary returns.

Recent government initiatives and policy reforms in India, including Startup India, Make in India, and Digital India, aimed at supporting startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), promoting innovation, and simplifying regulatory processes, have contributed to the increase in national patent filings. The impact of these efforts is evident in the growing number of startups, exceeding 50,000, with approximately 1,500 new startups added each year.

The COVID-19 pandemic also played a role in boosting innovation activities in India. The crisis prompted a rapid shift to digital solutions, accelerating the adoption of digital payment solutions, fintech innovations, and healthtech advancements.

The pandemic led to the rise of telemedicine, remote patient monitoring, and health-related apps, addressing healthcare challenges during the pandemic. Edutech also experienced growth as entrepreneurs seized opportunities to develop platforms and apps offering personalized solutions and improving the accessibility of educational services.

The World Intellectual Property Indicators Report is released annually by the World Intellectual Property Organization, providing a comprehensive overview of global IP activities.
