China’s Commitment to Global Intellectual Property Cooperation: A 2024 Outlook
China remains dedicated to strengthening its involvement in global intellectual property (IP) governance and fostering robust IP collaborations with the international community, as highlighted by Shen Changyu, the head of the National Intellectual Property Administration.
In a recent conference, Shen delivered a comprehensive work report outlining key objectives for 2024, with a focus on expanding collaborative efforts with Belt and Road partners, BRICS members, and ASEAN countries.
China’s proactive role in international IP cooperation during the previous year garnered recognition from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The WIPO’s Global Innovation Index for 2023 underscored China’s global leadership in science and technology clusters, solidifying its position with the greatest number of such clusters worldwide.
Moreover, Chinese enterprises secured two out of seven seats in the 2023 WIPO Global Awards program, a testament to their innovative use of intellectual property. This achievement positioned China as the country with the highest number of winners in the prestigious program.
Looking ahead to 2024, Shen Changyu affirmed China’s participation in diplomatic conferences addressing the design law treaty and intellectual property and genetic resources. These engagements are strategically aligned to further elevate China’s role in global IP governance.
In his address, Shen emphasized the pivotal role of future international cooperation, specifically highlighting the fields of data and geographic identification. These areas are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future landscape of intellectual property and collaborative initiatives.
China’s commitment to deepening collaborations on the Belt and Road, within BRICS, and across ASEAN nations underscores its dedication to fostering a dynamic and inclusive global intellectual property ecosystem.
