Promote IP to Indonesian students

Knowledge for students is one of the most important policies of every country as the students are the future, the ones holding and maintaining the system for other future generations to come. Consequently, to teach this new generation of students about Intellectual Property is to nurture the IP industry in the future, gaining society-wide knowledge of IP which is the foundation of high-educated civilization. Acknowledging this fact, the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) launched the IP Teaching Program For Students started from October 10, 2022.

In an official statement, Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly, Minister of law and human rights launched the IP Teaching Program For Students, teaching 5,000 schoolchildren from various parts of the nation about intellectual property.

According to Mr. Laoly, the young generations in Indonesia have amazing talents, expressing through many international as well as national awards. However, although they are creative, they don’t yet have the full knowledge on the creation of an object as well as the means, the needs to protect such object and how to protect it.

Accordingly, they need to be taught about IP from this very age, to grant them the idea of IP assets and how to protect their IPR. With the IP Teaching Program For Students by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property, the younglings in Indonesia will get first-hand knowledge on this matter.

As a matter of fact, this is not the first time an Asian country implement a teaching program to boost IP awareness in the young generation. Back in 2019, the Philippine Intellectual Property Office (IPOPHL) partnered with the Philippine Science High School System (PSHS) to establish college and university education program by the 2019 memorandum of understanding with the Higher Education Commission.

Regarding Indonesia’s teaching program, it is one of the 16 programs implemented in 2022 by DJKI as part of a roadmap to become a World Class IP Office. One of them is DGIP Teaching with participants in the program ranging from elementary school to university students.

Besides the protection idea, It is critical that kids are taught intellectual property (IP) from an early age since it not only raises knowledge of IP protection but also inspires children to be creative and inventive.

The IP Teaching Program For Students is also one of the latest programs of the Indonesia’s Government to socialize IP in society, including socialization of IP to the young generations, the SMEs, as well as normal citizens.
