The Philippines expanded the IP Day into IP Month
In April 2024, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) launched National Intellectual Property Month (NIPM) under the theme “IP and SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).”
The initiative encourages businesses, innovators, and creators to help accelerate progress towards achieving the SDGs related to people, peace, planet, and prosperity. This expansion follows the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)’s theme for World IP Day on April 26, 2024, which emphasizes intellectual property as a key driver for innovation and creativity.
At the kick-off press conference on April 1, 2024, IPOPHL Director General Rowel Barba highlighted the urgent need for developing countries like the Philippines to hasten progress on the SDGs. He referenced a 2023 United Nations report indicating that only 15 percent of the 140 quantifiable targets had shown progress, while 30 percent had stagnated. Barba called on the intellectual property community to embrace this challenge, pointing to the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028.
The plan underscores the critical role of the IP system and innovation in achieving national goals such as inclusiveness, climate resilience, green energy, modernized agriculture, and an improved standard of living.
Barba stressed the importance of fostering a robust intellectual property culture to drive innovations across various sectors, including healthcare, competitive industries, regional knowledge hubs, cultural protection, and enhancing creative and innovative assets.
NIPM activities throughout April include awareness campaigns, educational programs, and capacity-building workshops for different sectors within the IP community. The month will culminate with the Gawad Yamang Isip (GYI) Awards on April 29, 2024. This event serves as a platform for discussions aimed at improving the state of IP in the Philippines and honors businesses, innovators, and creators who effectively utilize their IP assets in line with the NIPM 2024 theme.
