Philippines holds IP boot camp to embrace TikTok’s ongoing influence in the economy
The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) recently organized an IP Boot Camp for brand owners, providing insights into TikTok Shop’s intellectual property regulations and its IP Protection Center (IPPC).
The IP Boot Camp, an initiative by IPOPHL, aims to empower IP rights holders with access to IP portals of ecommerce platforms, particularly those that are signatories to the E-Commerce Memorandum of Understanding. Brand owners were also encouraged to share their feedback during information sessions to improve these platforms’ IP frameworks and enforcement processes.
Christine V. Pangilinan-Canlapan, Supervising Director of the IP Rights Enforcement Office, emphasized the significance of engaging with TikTok Shop to tailor IP strategies and combat counterfeits effectively, given its extensive user base in Southeast Asia.
James Cheah, Brand Cooperation Manager of TikTok’s E-commerce IP Rights Protection Team, highlighted TikTok Shop’s innovative approach in merging entertainment with shopping, termed as “shoppertainment.” However, he acknowledged the challenges in monitoring and protecting IP within this dynamic platform, especially with the incorporation of video content.
To address these challenges, TikTok Shop developed the IPPC, an integrated platform to safeguard and enforce IP rights. Zinia Ang, Global E-Commerce IP Protection Operation Manager, highlighted the investment in resources to build the IPPC and emphasized its benefits for IP owners, including a faster takedown process and a comprehensive complaints management system.
Cheah encouraged IP owners to register for the IPPC, emphasizing its IP Vault feature for document storage and the broader worldwide search capabilities. He also emphasized TikTok Shop’s collaboration with law enforcement agencies and its commitment to implementing new policies to enhance IP monitoring.
Cheah stressed the importance of IP protection in maintaining consumer trust and influencing purchase decisions on the platform. He emphasized the value of maintaining integrity in IP protection to ensure user satisfaction and loyalty.
Overall, the IP Boot Camp provided valuable insights for brand owners to navigate IP protection within the evolving landscape of ecommerce platforms like TikTok Shop.
