Philippines: Anticipated Rise in Intellectual Property Filings
The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) expresses confidence in achieving a new record in intellectual property filings for the current year, citing a positive trend observed in the first 10 months.
IPOPHL Director-General Rowel Barba announced in a press conference that this year is expected to break previous records in IP filings. The figures show a notable increase, with 41,815 filings from January to October, nearly two percent higher than the 41,022 recorded during the same period last year.
Trademark filings constitute the majority of filings, totaling 35,538, reflecting a 0.41 percent rise from the 35,393 filings in the corresponding period last year. Barba highlighted a significant rise in utility model filings, recording 1,538 filings, marking a substantial 37.2 percent increase from the 1,121 filings reported a year ago.
Additionally, industrial design filings exhibited a growth of 9.8 percent, reaching 1,127 submissions. Patent filings similarly increased by 3.7 percent, totaling 3,612 submissions.
Barba disclosed a noteworthy rise in copyright deposits by 114 percent from 2,821 to 6,022 between January and October compared to the previous year.
Responding to questions about surpassing last year’s 48,259 filings, Barba expressed optimism, citing the upward trends observed over the first 10 months of the year.
With the rising trend in IP filings, Barba announced his directive to the agency’s bureau to further boost filings in 2024. He emphasized the goal of achieving at least a 10 percent growth from the current year’s performance.
Barba underscored that ongoing IP awareness initiatives will play a pivotal role in driving the growth of IP filings in the coming year. He highlighted the IPOPHL’s accomplishment of conducting 316 webinars and research conferences in the current year.
