More chances for Indonesia brands to attract global awareness
The Indonesian government has introduced avenues for traditional products and services to be registered as global brands.
This includes items like batik, jamu (herbal medicine), and gentong (large spherical clay pots), as disclosed by Secretary General Andap Budhi Revianto from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
He mentioned that he received encouraging news from Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly, who is currently attending the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
Laoly discussed the potential for Indonesian traditional products to attain global brand status during his diplomatic talks with Daren Tang, the Director General of WIPO, at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva.
Revianto explained that Indonesia’s membership in the Nice Agreement on the International Classification of Goods and Services allows for the utilization of international marks for specific products and services.
Through the Nice Agreement, Indonesia has the opportunity to include several traditional items like jamu, gentong, batik, and other customary commodities in the list of regulated goods and services.
This move will facilitate the promotion of Indonesia’s unique and historical trademarks, making it more convenient to categorize products for both national and international trademark registration under the Madrid Protocol.
The inclusion in the Nice Agreement signifies an enhancement of Indonesia’s national trademark system, bringing it in line with the registration criteria of other countries. Revianto emphasized that this step will improve Indonesia’s trademark infrastructure and align it with international standards.
The Nice Agreement, formally known as the “Nice Agreement Concerning the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks,” is an international treaty that establishes a standardized classification system for goods and services used in trademark registration. It was first adopted in 1957 and has undergone subsequent revisions.
It promotes consistency and harmonization in trademark registration procedures across different countries and facilitates the international protection of trademarks through the use of a common classification system.
