Indonesia makes new commitment within the fight against movie piracy

The Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Law and Human Rights Ministry has said that it aims to prevent infringement of film intellectual property by increasing public awareness and strengthening legal enforcement.

“We continue to support Indonesian cinema by providing information sessions, collaborating with film communities, and educating the public that the act of pirating films violates the law,” said Anggoro Dasananto, director of copyright and industrial design at DJKI.

DJKI has also stepped up preventative actions against IP infringement by executing joint ministerial regulations between the Law and Human Rights Ministry and the Communication and Information Ministry.

“IP owners who find or suspect IP violations of their work can report to DJKI’s Directorate of Investigation and Dispute Resolution for further legal processing,” said Dasananto.

He stated that his group would urge the Communication and Information Ministry to have any websites that were discovered to be violating the intellectual property of movies taken down.

In addition, another key aspect to support this claim to fight piracy in Indonesia is that to make it easier for players in the creative economy to find finance sources from banks or other non-bank financial institutions, PP No. 24 of 2022 was published.

Through Government Regulation (PP) No. 24 of 2022, which implements Law No. 24 of 2019 respecting the Creative Economy, creators can take advantage of the IP-based financing system.

Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI)

The Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) is an agency under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia. It is responsible for the management and protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) in Indonesia.

The DJKI’s main tasks include formulating policies and regulations related to IPR protection, administering the registration of patents, trademarks, industrial designs, and other forms of IPR, and providing services related to IPR registration and enforcement. The DJKI also participates in international forums and cooperates with other countries in the field of IPR.

The DJKI is responsible for implementing Indonesia’s Intellectual Property Law, which was enacted in 2001 and amended in 2016. The law aims to provide protection for various forms of IPR, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs, and trade secrets. It also provides for the establishment of a specialized court for IPR disputes, known as the Commercial Court.

In addition to its regulatory and administrative functions, the DJKI is also involved in promoting awareness and education related to IPR protection. The agency conducts seminars, workshops, and other activities to educate stakeholders on the importance of IPR protection and the procedures for obtaining and enforcing IPR in Indonesia.

Overall, the DJKI plays a critical role in promoting and protecting IPR in Indonesia, which is an important aspect of the country’s economic development and competitiveness in the global market.
