India recorded a remarkable increase in patents granted

In a significant achievement, the Indian Patent Office granted a record-breaking 41,010 patents during the fiscal year 2023 to 2024, as of November 15, 2023. This milestone marks the highest number of patents ever awarded in India.

The trajectory of patents granted in India has shown remarkable growth over the years. The number of patents granted was 4,227 for the fiscal year 2013 to 2014, which increased to 28,385 for the fiscal year 2021 to 2022. Subsequently, it surged further to 34,153 for the fiscal year 2022 to 2023.

Manisha Singh, Founder and Managing Partner at LexOrbis in New Delhi, expressed enthusiasm about the significant increase in granted patents during the current fiscal year. She emphasized that this surge reflects a robust innovation ecosystem within the country, showcasing the growing recognition of the importance of intellectual property rights and innovation.

Singh highlighted that fostering an environment that nurtures and rewards creativity and technological advancement contributes to India’s commitment to cultivating a culture of innovation. This commitment, in turn, fuels economic growth, attracts investment, and positions the country at the forefront of global innovation.

India has also played a pivotal role in the global increase in patent filings in 2022. The World Intellectual Property Indicators Report indicates that worldwide patent filings rose from 3.40 million in 2021 to 3.46 million in 2022. India contributed to this global rise with a notable increase of 31.6 percent in the number of applications filed by residents from 2021 to 2022. This underscores India’s active participation and impact in the global landscape of intellectual property.
