IPOPHL partners with Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines
The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has recently partnered with the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP) in a collaborative effort aimed at enhancing public safety by combating counterfeit medications and fostering an environment conducive to accessible, high-quality healthcare innovations.
Director General Rowel S. Barba of IPOPHL emphasized the significance of this collaboration in promoting innovation through intellectual property (IP) protection, thereby ensuring widespread access to affordable, quality medicines while safeguarding IP rights and the public from counterfeit drugs. This collaboration was solidified through the signing of two memoranda of understanding (MOU).
As a result of PHAP’s inclusion in the E-Commerce MOU, the anti-counterfeiting campaign now boasts 37 members. The Philippine E-Commerce MOU, established in 2021, facilitates collaboration among brand owners and online retailers like Lazada, Shopee, TikTok Shop, and Zalora to monitor and eliminate online activities that infringe on intellectual property rights.
The partnership between IPOPHL and PHAP entails close collaboration to develop and implement a comprehensive work plan, ensuring timely completion of objectives. Additionally, the agreements outline ethical guidelines for collaboration between healthcare service and technology providers, while also facilitating knowledge-sharing on relevant topics such as emerging distribution schemes for counterfeit drugs and legislative measures like the Pharmaceutical Innovation Bill and amendments to the IP Code of 1997. These legislative measures are crucial to advancing the shared objectives of both IPOPHL and PHAP.
