Exploring IP Trends at the 20th Shanghai International Intellectual Property Forum

The 20th Shanghai International Intellectual Property Forum was held on December 10 in Shanghai, focusing on the theme “Strengthening Legal Protection for Intellectual Property, Fueling Innovation-Driven Development of Digital Economy.”

Chen Jining, the Party Secretary of Shanghai, was present at the forum and delivered a speech. The opening ceremony saw the attendance and speeches of Shen Changyu, Commissioner of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), and Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Chen expressed Shanghai’s commitment to accelerate the establishment of a leading intellectual property (IP) protection front and an international IP center city. Shanghai aims to strengthen collaboration with WIPO, leveraging the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) it signed, fostering open cooperation for international IP initiatives, and supporting the expansion of operations for the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Shanghai Service.

Shen highlighted CNIPA’s dedication to implementing President Xi Jinping’s directives, advancing the development of an IP protection system for data, stimulating technological innovation in the digital sector, actively participating in international IP norm-setting for data, and propelling the digital economy’s growth. CNIPA, in collaboration with the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, seeks to transform the city into a high-level IP powerhouse, deepen data IP pilot projects, and expedite the creation of an internationally influential digital capital.

Tang acknowledged the 50th anniversary of cooperation between WIPO and China, recognizing China as a prominent global IP engine. Shanghai’s substantial role in supporting China’s IP ecosystem was emphasized. Tang highlighted the positive outcomes of the longstanding collaboration with WIPO and anticipated that the new MoU would further enhance cooperation, unlock innovation potential through IP, and contribute to building a better world.

The forum featured the unveiling of a report on IP-backed financing series from country perspectives, jointly compiled by CNIPA and WIPO. Shanghai leaders Li Zheng, Xie Dong, CNIPA Deputy Commissioner Lu Pengqi, and WIPO Deputy Director General Wang Binying also attended the opening ceremony. Jointly hosted by CNIPA, WIPO, and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, the three-day forum facilitated in-depth discussions among Chinese and international participants on topics such as digital innovation and IP protection.
