South Korea to work closely with the Middle East in IP matters

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) is actively working to strengthen collaboration in the intellectual property field with agencies in the Middle East.

KIPO Commissioner Insil Lee held meetings with officials in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates during her official visit to the region. The discussions led to agreements to implement a training program for UAE patent examiners developed by KIPO. The collaboration also includes efforts to assist startups and small enterprises, integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the patent system, and educate young people about inventions.

Commissioner Lee and Abdulla Al Saleh, the UAE’s undersecretary for the Ministry of Economy, pledged to strengthen cooperation in various areas. The initiative aligns with KIPO’s broader efforts to enhance ties with various nations, and it builds on the successful cooperation established with the UAE’s Ministry of Economy since 2014. As part of this collaboration, South Korean examiners have been providing patent examination services and consulting assistance to enhance the UAE’s intellectual property framework.

In Saudi Arabia, KIPO’s cooperative efforts since 2018 have resulted in significant outcomes, including the assignment of Korean professionals to the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP). KIPO assisted SAIP in developing a comprehensive national IP strategy, and this strong relationship has led to a senior KIPO official becoming an advisor to SAIP CEO Abdulaziz Alswailem.

During the Korea-Saudi Arabia Summit on October 22, 2023, Commissioner Lee and CEO Alswailem signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to reaffirm their commitment to enhancing collaboration in areas such as IP finance, IP training, and the use of patent information.

Further efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties involved Commissioner Lee meeting with Mohamed Hasan Al Malki, the Assistant Undersecretary for Industry Affairs at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Qatar. The meeting aimed to promote bilateral IP cooperation, and discussions included planning steps during a conference in Qatar to set goals, create a national IP strategy, and establish strategic tasks for the production, protection, and use of IP rights.
