Vietnam’s capital displays exhibition on the recognisation of fake and genuine goods to increase people’s awareness

On October 11, the General Department of Market Management of Vietnam inaugurated the exhibition hall showcasing genuine and counterfeit products under the theme “Identifying Trademarks under Protection” in Vietnam.

The exhibition was opened from October 11 to October 17 at 62 Trang Tien Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi. This event holds significant importance as it is one of the many meaningful activities organized by the General Department of Market Management, Ministry of Industry and Trade, to commemorate the 5th anniversary of its establishment (October 12, 2018 – October 12, 2023).

This exhibition attracted more than 500 products from various sectors such as cosmetics, functional foods, fashion, footwear, jewelry, automobile and motorcycle spare parts, consumer goods, dairy products, and agricultural products. These products belong to renowned brands like Honda, Yamaha, Piaggio, Hyundai, Abbott, Unilever, Johnson’s Baby, Top to Toe, Sunsilk, Clear, and Pantene, all of which have been registered and protected trademarks in the Vietnamese market.

More than a showcase of quality products from globally established brands, it’s an initiative with education as a purpose. Genuine products are on display alongside their counterfeit versions.

At the exhibition, Mr. Nguyen Duc Le, Deputy Head of the Office of Operations, General Department of Market Management, shared that consumers and businesses often encounter products with well-known brand names being counterfeited or imitated in various forms, such as copying designs, styles, or appearances similar to the authentic products. This situation confuses consumers and impacts the reputation of genuine brands and products of legitimate businesses.

Trademark protection is considered an effective measure to safeguard intellectual property rights for trademark owners, fostering fair competition among manufacturers. Importantly, protecting trademarks also contributes to combating the proliferation of counterfeit and low-quality products, helping consumers make informed and confident purchasing decisions.

In addition to the exhibition, the General Department of Market Management also inaugurated the “Traditional Market Management Space” on the same day, marking the 5th anniversary of its establishment. This initiative aims to enhance public awareness regarding the identification of genuine products, ensuring a close connection between businesses, citizens, and state management authorities in detecting, preventing, and addressing counterfeit products in the market.

This exhibition serves as an educational platform, empowering consumers with the knowledge to distinguish genuine products from counterfeit ones, reinforcing the importance of trademark protection, and fostering a culture of integrity and authenticity in the marketplace.

Beginning in 2022, Vietnam has been witnessing an uptick in counterfeiting activities, mainly in the online space where trademark infringers have moved to sell knockoff goods – from cosmetics to cigarettes and fertilizers.

On March 29, 2023, Vietnam issued Decision No. 319/QD-TTg approving the Anti-Counterfeiting and Consumer Protection in ecommerce by 2025 Plan.
