Society of Indian Law Firms organized SILF AI Conference 2024
The Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) organized the SILF AI Conference 2024 in New Delhi, inaugurated by Rajiv Mani, secretary of the legislative department in India’s Ministry of Law and Justice. The conference, spearheaded by SILF president Lalit Bhasin, gathered more than 12 national and international law firms and 44 speakers from legal, tech, policy, and industry sectors to discuss responsible and inclusive AI.
Mani emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that AI benefits reach all segments of society, not just the elite, underscoring the importance of inclusivity in tech initiatives. Bhasin echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for a robust mechanism to address potential issues like AI hallucination and the emergence of a two-tier system in AI adoption.
Bhuvnesh Kumar from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) commended technological advancements in disease detection in plants and stressed the importance of upholding constitutional values while regulating AI.
Pravin Anand, SILF senior vice president, discussed the risks of AI misuse and highlighted instances of data biases, advocating for responsible regulation and growth in AI. Shardul Shroff, founder of Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co., emphasized the transformative potential of AI for economic growth.
The conference also featured keynote speeches on data governance by Justice (Retd) BN Srikrishna and Maja Bogataj Jančič, founder of the Intellectual Property Institute in Slovenia. Panel discussions addressed topics such as AI and Data Governance, Bridging the AI Divide with Global South, and a fireside chat with AI startups.
Panellist Mahaveer Singhvi from the Ministry of External Affairs stressed the need to bridge the gap between the global north and south in AI adoption.
Overall, the conference underscored the transformative power of AI while emphasizing the importance of responsible regulation to mitigate risks. Day 2 of the conference will feature a keynote address on AI and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) by Justice Pratibha Singh.
