Singapore tighten the sentences of pirate distributers
On March 26, 2024, a 36-year-old man, Ge Xin, was brought before court in Singapore for the sale of illegal streaming devices and the installation of software enabling access to pirated content in his two retail outlets located in Sim Lim Square, the country’s prominent IT and electronics shopping hub.
Ge’s shops, named MT Gadget+ and Grandnew, were found to be selling illicit streaming equipment during a raid conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department authorities on October 4, 2022, resulting in the confiscation of over 400 sets of illegal streaming devices.
Ge’s actions constituted copyright infringement against entities such as Netflix, Disney, and the Football Association Premier League, among others, as explained by Anna Toh, director at Amica Law in Singapore.
Toh highlighted the widespread availability of illegal streaming devices in Singapore through various channels, including e-commerce platforms, Telegram groups, and in-person transactions. She noted that while many viewers prefer legitimate streaming services for movies and TV shows, illegal streaming remains prevalent, particularly for sports events like the English Premier League and the FIFA World Cup, due to perceived high costs associated with legal streaming options.
Toh suggested that a more targeted approach, focusing on addressing the motivations for illegal streaming, might prove more effective than solely enforcing rights. She proposed adjustments to pricing and distribution channels by rights holders to align with market expectations, particularly for different types of content.
Ge is facing 24 charges under the Copyright Act, while his companies are facing 12 charges each. These charges reflect Singapore’s strengthened stance against piracy and its commitment to upholding intellectual property rights within its jurisdiction.
