Keynotes on the 12th BIP
The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Algernon Yau shared his remark on IP situations in the world: “Asia is rising as a converging point for IP activities. Amongst the IP5 Offices (see Note), the five largest intellectual property offices in the world, three are in Asia. In terms of the number of IP filings, IP offices in Asia accounted for more than two-third of the world IP filing activities and the China National Intellectual Property Administration topped the chart of filings for patents, trade marks and industrial designs. China’s Belt and Road Initiative will further fuel the IP trade in the region, provide countless business opportunities in the Asian, European and African continents covered by the route, and generate overwhelming demand for high-level support services for the world to employ.”
At the end of the opening speech, Mr Algernon Yau, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development at the Policy Dialogue Session of the 12th Business of Intellectual Property (IP) Asia Forum concluded: “IP has an eminent value in this global economy. I look forward to hearing the sharing of our distinguished guests on how policymakers around the world are working to help our start-ups, businesses, intermediaries, and society as a whole to reap the full benefits of the IP age.”
ASEAN Working Group on Intellectual Property Cooperation (AWGIPC) chair Rowel S. Barba talked about the importance of the ASEAN IP Portal: “The ASEAN IP Portal, a portal that compiles data on ASEAN IP systems and comparative IP-related statistics, was made possible by the AWGIPC. The site also provides a unique route for all IP markets of ASEAN IP offices, enabling IP rights holders to put up their IPs for sale or licensing, and allowing investors to quickly look for their next innovation investment. Additionally, the AWGIPC has created a number of databases that are essential for gaining access to data on trademarks, patents, designs, and geographical indications.”
Mr. Barba further added: “In the near future, we hope to set up a portal to provide data and other legal and business information on the copyright-based industries in the ASEAN. In keeping with the IP capacity needs of emerging knowledge-based industries in the region, the AWGIPC also launched the ASEAN IP Academy, which aims to elevate businesses’ expertise in IP protection, creation, licensing and commercialization in the region.”
