Uzbekistan becomes member of the Hague Agreement on Industrial Designs
On April 5, 2024, Uzbekistan officially became a member of the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Deposit of Industrial Designs, marking a significant step towards enhancing its international commerce and protecting intellectual property rights.
This development follows the enactment of draft legislation by the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, enabling Uzbekistan’s accession to the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement, which oversees the international registration of industrial designs.
By ratifying the Geneva Act, Uzbekistan now offers its citizens a streamlined process for registering industrial designs across multiple countries that are part of the agreement. This move underscores Uzbekistan’s commitment to fostering innovation, safeguarding intellectual property rights, and promoting global trade.
The Hague Agreement provides a centralized system for acquiring and maintaining rights to industrial designs through a single international application, which can be extended to any number of the agreement’s signatory countries. The Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement covers over 70 nations, including those in the Baltic region and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
This accession is expected to bolster Uzbekistan’s manufacturing sector by facilitating easier access to international markets and encouraging the development of new products. The streamlined registration process will enhance the protection of industrial designs and support the country’s efforts to promote innovation and global trade.
