The Annual Conference of the International Bar Association (IBA) 2023 took place in Paris, France

The Annual Conference of the International Bar Association (IBA) 2023, held from October 29 to November 3, aimed to bring together legal experts worldwide to discuss, support, and advance legal reform and social justice.

This marked the 75th year that the IBA connected legal professionals from around the globe, fostering communication, unity, and seeking solutions to common challenges. Notably, for the first time in two decades, the event was led by a woman, Almudena Arpón de Mendívil, who aimed to highlight the legal profession’s contributions to society.

IBA President Arpón de Mendívil expressed enthusiasm about the opportunities presented by the 2023 Annual Conference in Paris. Emphasizing the clear goal of uniting professionals globally, the conference aimed to enhance communication, consensus, and seek solutions to shared challenges, fostering intellectual development and improving professional connections within specific legal domains. Paris, renowned for its enlightenment and rich legal heritage, provided an ideal venue for this year’s conference.

Aligned with Arpón de Mendívil’s vision and the efforts of various IBA committees, a significant portion of the 2023 Annual Conference focused on key issues facing the legal industry, which are anticipated to persist in the coming years. These priorities, outlined by the IBA President, were established in consultation with leading international and national law firms, as well as management departments.

In addition to discussions on these priorities, delegates had the opportunity to hear from experienced speakers each morning, including Lech Walesa, former President of Poland and Nobel Peace Prize laureate; Zack Kass, former Director of OpenAI and a futurist and AI innovation expert; Christopher Stephens, Deputy General Counsel and Legal Adviser of the World Bank Group; and Helle Thorning Schmidt, Co-Chair of Meta’s Supervisory Board and former Prime Minister of Denmark.

The IBA Showcase, themed “New Leadership of Women in Law Firms: Game-Changing Factors?” and hosted by President Arpón de Mendívil, Myra Garret, President of the IBA Public Interest and Professional Responsibility Division (William Fry, Ireland), and Carola Van den Bruinshort, President of the IBA Legal Practice Division (Loyens & Loeff, Netherlands), featured prominent speakers from various international legal firms.

Given ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, disruptions in the energy market, and climate crises, the value of a robust legal community cannot be underestimated. The IBA, with its global network of over 80,000 individual members, plays a crucial role as a stronghold to protect and promote legal principles in such challenging times.

IBA 2023 emerged as an essential event for international lawyers, aiming to increase legal professionals’ awareness of their significant contributions in integrating legal traditions with current issues. The event continued to uphold the principles that have guided and shaped the organization since its establishment in 1947: legal principles, democracy, and human rights.

IBA 2023 took place from October 29 to November 3 at Palais des Congrès de Paris, 2 Place de la Porte Maillot, 75017 Paris, France.
