The Philippines: Intellectual property registrations decreased by 5.5% in H1
According to data from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), intellectual property filings decreased by 5.5 percent in the first half of the year, mostly because of fewer trademark applications.
According to preliminary IPOPHL data, IP filings for patents, utility models (UM), industrial designs (ID), and trademarks decreased to 22,203 in the first six months of 2022, down from 23,494 in the same period in 2022.
Trademark filings, which accounted for the majority of all IP applications, decreased by 8% to 18,599.
Non-resident filers accounted for 34.4 percent of all filers, while resident filers accounted for 65.6 percent of all filers.
Pharmaceutical, health, and cosmetics goods saw the most trademark registrations (18.7 percent), followed by agricultural products and services (17.9 percent), and scientific research, information, and communication technologies (13.5 percent).
According to IPOPHL, the lower number of trademark applications, an indicator of new products and services, demonstrates the economy’s slower growth during this period.
The IPOPHL also recorded a 9% rise in patent registration applications to 2,134.
According to IPOPHL, non-resident registrants filed 1,916 applications, accounting for 90%, while the locals filed 218, accounting for 10% of the total amount of applications.
It went on to say that the majority of patent applications (24.47 percent) were for pharmaceuticals, organic fine chemistry (10.58 percent), and digital communications (7.89 percent).
Similarly, UM files, a patent-like IP property used to protect inventions, increased 27.7 percent to 835, indicating a return from the pandemic.
A total of 802 applications, or 96%, were from locals, while 33, or 4%, were from non-residents. Food chemistry (55.6 percent), basic material chemistry (8.9 percent), and pharmaceuticals (5.6 percent) received the highest percentage of UMs.
ID applications, which are intended to protect a product’s three or two-dimensional aesthetic characteristics, increased by 17.6 percent to 635 from 540.
Residents accounted for 337 filings, accounting for 53.1 percent of all filings. Non-resident ID applications accounted for 298 (or 46.9) of the total. The top industries for ID applications were transportation or hoisting (15.4%), furnishing (11.1%), and packages and containers for the transport or handling of products (10.8%).
IT patent and ID applications increased year over year nearly every month, whereas UM increased consistently every month.
IPOPHL also reported a 64.5 percent increase in copyright registrations to 2,833.
