WIPO: Indonesia is among the countries with the highest number of IP applications
According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Indonesia is among the top ten developing countries with the most intellectual property (IP) applications.
This achievement is the result of everyone’s effort in increasing the number of intellectual property applications in Indonesia. In addition, Indonesia has ranked in the top ten middle-income countries for the number of trademark registrations.
According to WIPO’s 2021 annual report, which was issued at the end of 2022, Indonesia ranked second worldwide in regard to the number of trademark applications with 127,142 registrations. Mexico, on the other hand, claimed first place with 199,389 registrations.
Other countries on the list were Vietnam (113,079 applications), Argentina (85,844), Ukraine (71,234), the Philippines (64,946), Colombia (55,606), Pakistan (51,325 applications), Peru (42,605), South Africa (39,863 applications).
Furthermore, Indonesia ranked tenth among WIPO members in terms of basic patent applications, with 3,249 registrations. Moreover, Thailand had 4,009 registrations, Turkey had 4,490 registrations, Ukraine had 4,425 registrations, South Korea had 4,009 registrations, Germany had 10,576 registrations, Russia had 9,079 registrations, Australia had 7,844 registrations, Turkey had 4,490 registrations, Japan had 5,238 registrations (3,762 registrations).
To meet the need for applications and improve domestic IP protection, Indonesia has developed a number of digital-based innovations for easy, low-cost, and open IP registration procedures. In 2022, Indonesia launched automated approval services for trademark registrations (POP Merek) and copyright registration (POP HC).
