The 5th meeting of leaders of IP offices of ASEAN countries – Korea

From November 14 to 16, 2022, the delegation from the Intellectual Property Office (IP) of ASEAN member countries attended the 5th meetings of leaders of IP offices of ASEAN countries – Korea held in Seoul, South Korea.

The delegates from ASEAN countries highly appreciate the close cooperation relationship between ASEAN and the Republic of Korea in many fields, especially in the field of Intellectual Property established since 2018.

The Chairman of the Intellectual Property Cooperation Working Group – the Director of the Philippine Intellectual Property Office and the leaders of the IP Offices of the 8 ASEAN countries shared the same view on their relationship with Korea, showing recognition of the cooperation between ASEAN and Korea over the past time which has brought forth many economic benefits to all parties involved.

During the Meeting with the theme of Intellectual Property and Innovation Towards a Sustainable Future, the leaders of ASEAN countries expressed their willingness to prolong cooperation with Korea and wish to achieve more and better achievements in the future together, in which innovation will play the most important role.

During the meeting, KIPO and representatives of ASEAN countries discussed many items together. In it, education on intellectual property is mentioned. The parties agreed that the countries in the conference should make efforts to improve IP education infrastructure within their territories.

In this regard, the Philippines has partnered with the Philippine Science High School System (PSHS) to establish college and university education program in 2019 to promote IP knowledge on the basis level, along with other notable programs. The Indonesia has also pioneered in this area recently, with the IP Teaching Program For Students started from October 10, 2022.

Educational content needs to be diverse, suitable for different ages of students so that countries can have the next generation of intellectual property experts in the next era. Not only experts but also achieve the common goal which is to popularize knowledge so that the concept of intellectual property becomes one of the normal factors in society, raising the general awareness of the whole country about this field.

The meeting reviewed cooperation activities over the years from 2019 to 2022 since the ASEAN-Korea cooperation mechanism on IP was established in 2018 and approved the Joint Statement of the Meeting on Intellectual Property Cooperation between ASEAN and Korea.

In the event, the leaders of the IP Offices of ASEAN countries and KIPO had a visit to the Korea Intellectual Property Exhibition – the largest exhibition on the topic of IP held annually in Korea, registered by KIPO and the Korea Patent Promotion Association (KIPA).
