Massive creativity rise of India in 2022

India is one of the most populated countries in the entire world. Consequently, in the over one billion people of India, many genii have arisen throughout history, holding important positions in the world, such as the current CEO of Google, Mr. Sundar Pichai, and recently, the new United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Mr. Rishi Sunak. As an acknowledgment of India’s development, the recent Global Innovation Index (GII) has seen India’s ranking in creativity on the rapid rise, at the 40th position in 2022 in contrast to its 81st position back in 2015.

According to the GII 2022 released by WIPO, India ranked 40th with the GII score of 36.6

India is also the number one country according to income group rank (the lower middle-income economy group) and region rank, demonstrating the top power of India in the region of Southern Asia.

With its rise in position, this has marked the first time India entered the Top 40 position of the annual innovation index which ranked 132 countries. In 2015, this country only placed 81st, slowly reaching the 46th position in 2021 and finally reaching 40th in 2022.

Supporting countries at all stages of development in strengthening their innovation ecosystem is a key objective of the GII. More than a reference guide, the GII has established itself as a powerful tool for the construction and development of pro-innovation policies, with countries working with WIPO to create similar indices at the sub-national level.

The Global Innovation Index 2022 was prepared under the general direction of Daren Tang, Director General, in WIPO’s IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector led by Marco Alemán, Assistant Director General, and in the Department of Economics and Data Analytics led by Carsten Fink, Chief Economist.

Expert opinions

Tarun Khurana, partner at Khurana & Khurana in New Delhi appraised the development of India on the world stage. On the reason why India rise so fast, Mr. Khurana stated that it can be due to the exponential increase in the number of startups focusing on diverse problems, the huge influx of funding for startups since 2019, and the significant increase in the number of filings for intellectual property protection including patents.

Khurana stated: “The progress is further contributed to by significant increase in the number of patents and other forms of IP by various Indian entities including academic entities and established brands/entities who are motivated to file for an increasing number of applications for better rankings along with startups and mid-size entities who not only get financial support for filing patent applications but are also able to substantiate such filings as part of their valuation pitch statements and product commercialization strategies”.

Not just the private sector but the government of India’s efforts have also been recognized: “Furthermore, the Indian government has also been heavily investing in making India an innovation-driven economy as part of the Make in India drive, which is evidenced by the innovation boom, for instance, in the fintech, infrastructure, EV, software, telcom, among other such verticals.”
